Gilles Ghez

Gilles Ghez is a French visual artist born July 9, 1945 in Paris. He is the grandson of the Montmartre painter Georges Emile Capon who gained some notoriety during the interwar period thanks to his paintings of girls and neighborhood bars. Gilles Ghez claims to be a “literary” artist. Choosing neither painting nor sculpture, he made himself known in the early 1970s for his “boxes” in which he installed miniaturized characters and sets, which he produced and painted himself. In these miniature theaters, he unveils the successive episodes of a kind of autobiography in which the imagination takes the lead and where references to Hollywood films rub shoulders with a declared dandyism as well as allusions to famous texts or places visited. . These small theaters also recall the charm of the models that the scenographers build to prepare the sets for plays and operas. His work has been admired since 1976 in numerous personal and group exhibitions, notably at the Grand PAlais and the Carrousel du Louvre.
