Presentation

Since he was very young, Jérôme Poumès has been inexorably attracted to drawing and painting, which he practices several hours a day. For him, it is an opportunity to escape from the world around him and to create a universe in which he finds serenity and satisfaction.

After graduating in philosophy and art history in Bayonne, he left his native region and studied for two years at the famous art school "Penninghen" on rue du Dragon in Paris and finished his studies at the no less famous Charpentier academy, also in Paris. In parallel to a successful career as an art director

In parallel to a successful career as an art director, he devotes himself to pictorial expression in various forms and techniques but more particularly to acrylic on canvas with a knife. The practice of his art is an open window on the world around him, far from the tumultuous and competitive daily world of his activity as an art director in communication.

With an academic background, his painting has taken several directions, from figurative to abstract or even to a certain form of expressionism.

The universe he proposes is very energetic through his compositions, his lively style as well as his particularly contrasting and richly nuanced tones, which highlight a formidable work on light and the object. His sources of inspiration are history, human feelings and emotions, mythology, the urban environment and the beauty of nature, to name but a few.

His works are also based on his own experience and personal emotions. He remains above all an "artist-researcher", an explorer, always in search of unexplored creative lands. It is undoubtedly this thirst for new sensations that led him to take an interest in the practice of sculpture.

Indeed, the desire to move from the 2D to the 3D world is the result of a lifelong fascination with the impact of light on the object, thus creating volume.

This quest for power, which characterises his work on canvas, is perpetuated through the meticulously chosen, modelled, hammered and patinated forms of his steel pieces, made exclusively from recycled materials in an eco-responsible dynamic.

Sculpture has been part of his desires for many years, but it was the meeting with the sculptor and ironworker Gilbert Kadysewski that finally decided to make his project a reality.

Trained by the latter in the art of forging and arc welding techniques, Jérôme then plunged headlong into the material, multiplying his experiments in working with steel by offering us a palette of works of great diversity according to his emotions and his creative desires.

For him, there are no boundaries between the various art techniques he practices. Thus his paintings and sculptures feed off each other in a continuity of research and creative energy, constantly renewed by a spirit of permanent watchfulness and fundamental curiosity.

A non-conformist artist at heart and of a rare simplicity, he advocates the pleasure of creating in the way of self-fulfilment, in all honesty and humility. For him, the goal must fade away in favour of the sole desire to create. One does not seek to obtain, but rather to create, until a certain form of satisfaction and plenitude is revealed to oneself through the work.

Jérôme Poumès regularly exhibits in France and abroad, for example at the International Exhibition of SARRIA in Spain in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, or in TOKYO since 2013.
