Presentation

Sporting one name but many talents, French-born Maripol is an artist, photographer, fashion designer, film producer and director. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, France, Maripol traveled to New York, where she would soon become art director at the fashion house Fiorucci. She began to haunt the uber-hip Studio 54, where she photographed giants like Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, and Grace Jones, contemporary with the new downtown underground Mudd club. She also produced the film Downtown 81, with Glenn O'Brien writing the script and Edo Bertoglio directing, starring the young Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Maripol also founded her own fashion line, Maripolitan, whose accessories were popularized by Madonna, whom Maripol styled on the legendary cover of Like a Virgin. In recent years, she has directed The Message, a documentary on Keith Haring; served as Polaroid artist and filmmaker for fashion houses such as Dior, Hugo Boss, Valentino, and Oscar de la Renta; and published books of her photography. Her work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1 in New York; the Brooklyn Museum; the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Barbican in London, and the Guggenheim Bilbao.
