Presentation

Enlightened stroller, the questioning gaze is at the epicentre of Smith's work. A critical observer of the ever-unstable relationship between us and our planet, Smith initiated his singular project: "The Leisure Territories".

Smith's approach towards our "natural environment" explores how our society "designs" the landscape to fit our secular requirements. Patrick Smith envisions the de-naturalization of the landscape brought about by modernity through the prism of the travel industry. This industry can both transform a landscape into a "monstrous being" we no longer recognize; or render it superficially perfect and unthreatening.

Patrick Smith shows us the world in all its abstract "unreality". The figures are so ideally placed within the photographs, one can easily think they are staged. If the composition of some photographs brings to mind the paintings of Brueghel the Elder; the glazed texture and incisive colours recall the enchanting worlds conjured by advertising. Skiing on polyester snow, dining in peristyle-filled forests, sunbathing on beaches; the men and women leisurely occupying Patrick Smith's landscapes invite us to reconsider the way we see our world.

Born in Lille, France, in 1955, Patrick Smith is anglo-french. He started photography in england at the age of 12, in a boarding shcool in shoreham-by-sea, Sussex.

Patrick turned professional after a short career as an engineer. He works for prestigious magazine (the NY Times, Time magazine, Le Monde, amongst others) shooting architecture and travel features. His work is shown by several galleries worldwide, among which danziger projects in New York that exhibit Patrick's work at Paris photo in 2011.
