Presentation

Originally a Political Scientist and Philosopher, Saul Steinberg has achieved legendary status for his long standing career as cartoonist and illustrator for The New Yorker.

Steinberg's art was an exploration of social and political systems, language, and art itself. During his career his original works were also shown in over 80 exhibitions.

Steinberg (1914 – 1999) was a Romanian and American artist who described himself as "a writer who draws". Steinberg's long, multifaceted career encompassed works in many media and appeared in different contexts. In addition to magazine publications and gallery art, he produced advertising art, photoworks, textiles, stage sets and murals.

“I don't quite belong to the art, cartoon or magazine world, so the art world doesn't quite know where to place me." He made no distinction between high and low art, instead choosing to follow his own creative promptings, resulting in a body of work that is diverse, unpretentious, conceptually rich, and imaginative. His work is often simultaneously humorous and sophisticated.
