The expert's report written by the renowned Toyen expert Dr Karel Srp is enclosed. Dr Srp remarks:
“There was a hidden collage on a postcard in an envelope Toyen sent from one of her trips to France to André Breton and Jean Schuster at the editorial office of the Surrealist magazine Medium. The collage, made on a postcard depicting a frozen weir, includes several pasted and hand drawn elements, for instance the ladder in the background. We can assume that the composition of interlocking individual subjects is one of the widespread Surrealist games, containing hidden motifs that allow the viewers to create a story in their minds. The meaning of the work is open and it is up to the viewer to play it out in his or her own imagination. In this collage, there are bodily fragments, a wooden boat, and importantly an inverted clock - one of Toyen's favorite subjects, a reference to time beyond perception, one controlled by the imagination. Sending similar postcards was one of the favorite activities of members of the artistic group Devětsil, as well as later members of the Surrealist group from the early 1920s onwards. It was their way of releasing imagination and allowing for spontaneity and inventiveness. The bare feet as the main subject of this collage are striking, as is the hand-drawn theme of “salvation", indicated by the ladder, most likely reaching to heaven. Edited collage postcards and inscriptions were important in the Surrealist community, maintaining and fostering mutual friendships within during existentially difficult times."
There are very few similar postcards by Toyen, this is an exceptional and one-of-a-kind example.
Toyen (Marie Cerminova) ranks among the most independent creative personalities of the last century. She gave up her girl's name and adopted a mysterious pseudonym. She lived an independent lifestyle and thanks to her extraordinary painterly qualities, bold imagination and intensity of expression, she occupies a unique place in the whole of modern art. In the early 1920s, she formed a lifetime friendship with Jindrich Styrsky, and together they formed mutually inspiring and complementary individuals. In Paris, they founded their own artistic movement – artificialism. For Toyen, painting was a natural inner need, depicting a variety of symbols. Today, her works are the highlight of major art auctions.
