1976 was a famous drought year in California.
That year it was forbidden to fill swimming pools to save water, particularly in the Los Angeles area. Skateboarding was an emerging sport, and Santa Monica surfers complemented surfing with skateboarding. In 1976 they took over empty swimming pools: they took over the gardens of houses in the suburbs of L.A. to “surf” (skate) in the empty swimming pools. The other places for skateboarding were schools because the kids took over public places near where they lived. Some schools had concrete embankments that made perfect ramps. some of these kids became the first famous skateboarders through the first skateboarding teams and competitions in the USA; this period of emergence and freedom has been immortalized by photos, films and books; best known as "Dogtown and the Z Boys". "Dogtown", the nickname for Santa Monica at that time because the area was quite deprived at that time and the young surfers (often on the fringes) were likened to stray dogs. The Z boys = the Zéphir boys. Zephir was the name of the first Santa Monica team, led by the owner of a surf and skate shop.
So I tried to pay homage to this "golden" and founding period of skateboarding, with colorful paintings, rather close-ups with movement, oil impastos contrasting with blue/pale skies or the blue of swimming pools. empty... to translate this spirit of novelty and freedom, also subversive in the appropriation of public and private space. Very often the police chased these young people in the street, in closed schools or empty private swimming pools...
I was inspired by photos of Glen Friedmann or Hugh Holland who photographed the sessions at that time.

France  • 1969

Influenced very early on by the graphic arts, Vince has

first wanted to make comics as a teenager, imitating his favorite authors. He gives it up and turns to studies

scientists. Retaining the inner need to draw and paint, he began to do watercolors in the early 90s, then oil

as well as many other techniques that he continues to experiment with to this day.

He appreciates a large number of graphic arts but especially figurative ones, from cave paintings to comic strips and 14th century altarpieces. Using many mediums such as paper, tape, paint, watercolor, pastel, acrylic and oil paint, graphite, pen, cement, glues, chemicals, the corroded metal, he lets the materials express themselves with undesirable mixtures which give unexpected and interesting results.

He also tries not to forget the design, the solid structure of a

“good painting” the color and materials, giving the atmosphere, the

power and feel.

Born in 1969, lives in France
