Gene Pompa

Italy  • 1952

Maestro Gene Pompa was born in Alexandria/Egypt on March 11, 1952.

He has lived in Rome since 1962, where he graduated in Murales from the St Giacomo Institute.

"Although it is easy for a painter to discuss and exhibit his work and to explain his goals, it is a much more complex task to speak about his life. His full name is Generoso Pompa but, since he was a child, he has been nicknamed "Gene" and this is how he signs his artworks."

And thus, with his usual subtle irony, Gene introduces himself to the audience.

Of Italian origins, he was born in Alexandria on March 11, 1952, where he spent a happy childhood until the age of ten, when his carefree life was abruptly brought to an end by political changes that happened in Egypt in the 1960s. Because of this his family was forced to abandon everything and planned to emigrate to Australia. However, the journey ended in Rome - Italy, where the Maestro still lives with his family.

"In Egypt, because he was born to Italian parents, they called him "the Italian", while in Italy, having been born abroad, he has been called "the Egyptian".

He began his career as a painter in the seventies, becoming familiar with artistic techniques by copying the works of the great Masters of the past.

Since the 1990s he has been working full-time, alternating surreal works with exquisitely landscaped works. The "brand" that makes Gene's painting instantly recognizable is most certainly his relief technique: thanks to the intentional use of spatula and brushes accomplishes three-dimensional paintings in oil.

"I must admit that from the very first time I exhibited my works, I felt a joyful and warm reaction from the public and, later, from the critics who encouraged me to continue my research and my quest to refine my technique which, over time, has led me to obtain numerous national and international acknowledgments and awards."

An important turning point in his artistic career is the opening in 1998 of his Atelier, in Rome in Via Bellinzona (Trieste district). Because of the growing recognition of the public, he opened a second art gallery in the historic center of the renowned town of Spoleto on Via del Palazzo dei Duchi.

Maestro Gene is considered as a well known established artist, he has participated in more than 100 personal exhibitions as well as 600 national and International art exhibitions.

In 2013 his Monography was published by Giorgio Mondadori and edited by Prof. Giovanni Faccenda.

In 2014/15 two personal catalogues were also published, with texts written by Prof. Vittorio Sgarbi.

2016 saw My Art published with critical text written by Prof. Daniel Radini Tedeschi.

In 2014/15/16 some of his works were part of the set design of the GEO program of RAI3.

Prof. Giammarco Puntelli has been following and tutoring Maestro Gene since 2017. He also accompanies and aids in the organization of important cultural events, including international ones, the latest of which is the Dubai 2020 Universal Expo. And, in 2020, a second Monograph was published by Giorgio Mondadori with an accompanying text by Prof. Philippe Daverio. In 2021 he gets the front cover of the Artist Yearbook publisched by Arnoldo Mondadori. In 2022 he began a collaboration with Prof. Gianni Resti, former creator and President, at the time, Senesi Museum Foundation  to organize exhibition event in Tuscany. At the end of the year, the book “Gene the painter who unites colors with light"  written by Prof. Gianni Resti, Giorgio Mondadori edition, is published.

His work has also been shown in prestigious public and private galleries and museums.

The artist's artworks are owned in museums and private collections worldwide.

Snow Pearl art gallery provides certificates of authenticity for all artworks belonging to this artist sold by the gallery.
