serie "Tokyo Nocturnes : Blossoms and Clouds in Battle Symphony"

Hiro Ando's captivating canvases, where Tokyo's nocturnal pulse meets the delicate essence of his iconic flowers and clouds, weave a compelling narrative. Rooted in the enigmatic world inspired by Koushun Takami's "Battle Royale," Ando introduces a familiar character, the schoolgirl, into the kaleidoscope of Tokyo's nightlife.

Those canvases emerges as a testament to Ando's multifaceted artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from the raw, visceral themes of "Battle Royale," the canvases becomes a stage for the juxtaposition of innocence and the harsh reality of a dystopian world. The iconic schoolgirl, a survivor in Takami's dark fable, finds herself in a new realm, navigating the labyrinthine streets of Tokyo.

Ando's night sketches are a testament to his keen observation of the city's vibrant life. The neon lights cast an ethereal glow, reflecting off the wet pavements as the schoolgirl moves with a delicate determination. The juxtaposition of the iconic flowers and clouds introduces a dreamlike quality, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

In those canvas, Ando captures not just the physicality of Tokyo at night but delves into the emotional undercurrents. The schoolgirl becomes a symbol of resilience, an emblem of survival amidst chaos. The flowers, meticulously painted, symbolize hope and growth, a stark contrast to the grim narrative of "Battle Royale."

The fusion of these elements creates a harmonious yet poignant composition. Ando's mastery lies not only in his technical prowess but in his ability to infuse narrative depth into every stroke. Each flower, each cloud, becomes a silent storyteller, resonating with the viewer's emotions.

Those canvases beckons the audience to explore beyond the surface, inviting them to unravel the layers of symbolism embedded in each detail. Ando's canvaseses becomes a visual symphony, where the schoolgirl dances through the intricate melodies of Tokyo's nightlife, accompanied by the ever-present flowers and clouds.

As a piece within the larger oeuvre of Ando's works, this canvas stands as a testament to his commitment to storytelling through art. It serves as a bridge between the stark realities of a dystopian narrative and the enchanting dreamscape he creates within the vibrant nights of Tokyo.

The fusion of pop culture, literary inspiration, and a deep connection to Tokyo's streets makes those canvases a captivating chapter in Hiro Ando's artistic saga.

Emerging artists

Hiro Ando was born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku in Japan. Hiro Ando started his career as an illustrator in 1995. In 2005 he founded with Saori Nakamishi an artist studio in Tokyo to manage the creation and promotion of other young neo-pop artists who express their own popular culture in their creations. Today the studio "Crazynoodles" has ten artists.

Hiro Ando is a versatile artist. He works in oil on canvas, digital media or video. His technique consists of making several sketches before painting on canvas. The painting shapes itself and emerges in the streets of Tokyo at night, and combines lots of colors and graphics. Hiro paints dark cityscapes and goldfish all over the canvas.

The marriage of the two subjects makes the whole of the painting dynamic and violent, with a strange feeling of eternity given by the goldfish which recall old Japanese paintings and watercolors. The sculpture is a recent addition to the media used by Ando, who started working on a series of orange, green sculptures ... inspired by Japanese popular culture. Thus the cat, which is a lucky charm in Japan, like the Maneki-Neko, takes different forms such as the samurai or the sumo wrestler.

The artist translates this theme into a modern style. The shiny and smooth materials, the vivid colors, the brutal but rounded shapes of Hiro Ando's sculptures take us to the world of manga in which the artist's generation grew up. Hiro Ando's art is the meeting between the Meiji era and Manga, he is Shogun in the world of Pokemon, he is traditional Japan seen through the eyes of young people: he certainly belongs to Japanese neo pop art.
