Origin: France

Lake Saint Michel (450 ha), located at the foot of the mountain of the same name, extends over 4 municipalities: Botmeur – Brasparts – Brennilis – Loqueffret.

It has gently sloping banks made up of meadows, moors and peat bogs including that of Vénec classified as a National Nature Reserve. Its depth does not exceed 7 meters.

It was created in 1937 by the construction of a dam (a straight wall and thirteen adjoining vaults over 500 m in length and 11 m in height) on the Ellez River. The aim was to increase the production capacity of the EDF hydroelectric power station operating since 1928 further down the Ellez in Saint Herbot en Loqueffret at the foot of a 15 ha reservoir. The water from the lake was also used from 1967 to 1985 for the operation of the EDF nuclear power plant in Brennilis, which is currently being dismantled. The Public Information Center located on the site of the plant is an educational and interactive place to discover the history of electricity.

In an environment reminiscent of Irish landscapes, Lake Saint Michel, which can contain 13 million m3, is classified in the 1st category in terms of fish farming. It mainly houses pike, trout and perch. Since 2001, it has had the status of "Great Interior Lake".

Access to the lake by vehicle is possible at Brennilis (Nestavel Braz and Nestavel Bihan) and at Botmeur (Le Libist).

Developments have been made: slipways, walking paths, picnic areas, children's play area, etc.

A 15 km hiking circuit allows you to go around the lake in order to discover the particular natural environments of the Yeun Elez basin where, according to legend, the Youdig is located, a moving area where the gate of Hell.
