Hervé Dez - strange shoreline
Hervé Dez was born in Valognes in 1967 and studied in Rouen in History (1987) and in Paris at the Sorbonne en Art Plastiques (2012). Photographer since 1992 he started as a freelancer and B&W shooter at the CIRIC agency in Paris. Member of the Parisian collective "le bar Floréal" from 2002 to 2008, he exhibited in 2005 at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie his documentary work on the former Yugoslavia "Transition amère" as part of an exhibition for the collective's 20th anniversary. Extended until 2008, this work will be exhibited at the Kamchatka Gallery as part of the European Month of Photography 2008. The multimedia documentary "Transkraina" on the new frontiers of the Soviet Union, co-directed with Alexandre Billette for the website of the newspaper Le Monde, won the Philippe Chaffonjon 2015 prize. Since 2014 Hervé Dez has been working on Modification des lieux, a series of photographic creations based on a documentary approach to the way ordinary places are inhabited, the relationship between vernacular and picturesque landscapes and the relationship between the inhabitants and their daily spaces. In Etrange Rivage, he seeks to share the physical experience of the landscape. Questioning our relationship to the earth, examining the place of humans in nature, studying space through the act of seeing are some of the ideas proposed in this series, without forgetting the experience of the sublime.
Strange shoreline
Shores are riddles. Especially on the west coast of the Cotentin. Both limits and openings to infinity, alternately liquid nourishing or infertile sand, each time redesigned by a new geography, by timeless or untimely traces. Having become "common places" with mass tourism and holiday photography, shores remain places and "sea views" moments that offer us the experience of a powerful and strange feeling.
Shores and "sea views" appear with the first seaside resorts of the 19th century, and in a way, at the same time as photography. In this respect, we can recall the astonishment and enthusiasm for Gustave Le Gray's "La Grande Vague" when it was shown in 1856 in England.
Yet, if the "sea view" of painters and photographers has become a commercial argument for the tourism and real estate industries, it is above all based on a singular feeling, that of being faced with something that we cannot conceive of as a whole, an infinite that is both frightening and pleasing. And it is undoubtedly this inability that has pushed us all to photograph "sea views" on shores relentlessly since the 19th century. As if, the gap between the reality of what we see and our feeling found a way out in the capture of this moment and this place by photography.
But how can we photograph something that is both real and immeasurable? How to photograph something that is both always the same and never the same? How to photograph an overview and details that make our experience of the shoreline?
These are the questions that "Etrange rivage" addresses in Hauteville-sur-Mer, on the coast of Les Havres.
