Since antiquity, the body has been one of the favourite subjects of artists. Almost exclusively feminine, it has been a means of affirming the artist's technicality and skill through the learning of anatomy and proportions in the field of drawing, painting and sculpture.
It will also become the bearer of a variety of messages and allegories, both in the way it is made and in the choice of the model represented, which may, for example, serve to personify Justice, Victory, Peace or other abstract concepts.
Many models have chosen this path out of professional desire, out of love for creation, but sometimes also out of love for the artist himself.
The history of 20th century art has seen the emergence of extraordinary personalities such as the famous Marquise de Casati, or Kiki de Montparnasse, known as the Queen of Montparnasse, remarkable women whose strong temperament was a source of inspiration for many artists of the Paris of the 1920s, such as Man Ray, Kees Van Dongen and Modigliani.
Even today, female models continue to inspire our artists. For this reason, at the beginning of 2023, CORPS ET AME GALLERY wishes to honour these contemporary women through an exhibition bringing together the work of some twenty painters, cartoonists, sculptors and photographers around these women who have influenced their productions and their lives as artists. An exhibition emphasising the special relationship that artists have with their models, whether they are living models, taken from photographs or the fusion of several models, thus giving free rein to the imagination and fantasy.
The artists' relationship with their models:
- the Sketchers: they sketch their models in their studio and then choose the best sketches to paint.
- the Visuals: photo shooting of their models in the studio, then choosing the best images, retouching and cropping before painting.
- The Dreamers: fantasy models from their imagination.
- The Materialists: they make plaster casts of their models as a support for their sculptural creations.
- Perfectionists: search for the perfect image in image banks or photographs or according to their inspiration.
