Gábor Kerekes (1945-2014) was one of the photographers whose oeuvre has fundamentally changed the scene of Hungarian contemporary photography. He started to work as a photographer in 1971 and in the next more than forty years he created an unavoidable oeuvre. 

The characteristics of his series were the clear and ambitious concept and the perfectionism in the development. He was committed to photography and very strict to himself. 

This rigour and commitment resulted in a concentrated and unique series both from a visual point of view and from a technical point of view as well. After his first series, he broke with the actuality and tended to discover the possibilities of the depiction of the human Being as part of the Universe.

His strong influence on contemporary Hungarian photography is based on diverse factors. His visual world has attracted his peers’ attention from the very beginning. From the early seventies, he has organized this scene and done a lot to give impetus to the discourse on the phenomenon of contemporary photography and to keep that alive. 

He has organized plenty of important exhibitions and was the artistic director of the Association of Young Photographers for several years. His perfectionism and commitment in both qualities of the image and the photography have made him a reference for coming generations. 

His series was presented on several solo exhibitions, and he participated in a numerous group exhibition, from Instanbul to New York. His works can be found in prestigious public and private collections from Saud-Arabia to the USA.
