In his new paintings Rupert Hartley expands on his previously formalistic approach, his repetitions of grids and colour more explicitly alluding to both architecture and landscape, offering the viewer both flat planes and vistas. He considers his paintings a distillation of what he calls ‘the simulated environments and psychogeographies’ of his local environments in the coastal town of Hove where he lives. Originally painting squares as a way to see colours more clearly in the studio and to use up paints, the coloured squares have become central to his paintings in recent years. An overly familiar trope of art history, he exploits this simplistic form as an open emblem, looking back at art history but also reflecting his own connections to social, environmental and architectural space.
A constant in his work has been an exploration of architecture and city space, an interest he explored in the early 2000’s through walking and mapping art projects across city spaces, and now painting from a studio in Hove he finds connections in his daily use of the city informing how he defines the scale, surface and colour of his work.

Rupert Hartley is a British visual artist living and working in Hove, East Sussex. Trained originally in printed textile design at the Glasgow School of Art later studied an MA in Architecture at University of East London.
His recent paintings focus on the grid; colour and the repeated gesture, using a layered approach he creates frameworks of colour through numerous re-paintings and revisions.
His current inter-scenic series signals a bold new development in this work bringing together several strands of his practice from his previous works that play with formal geometries and reference his local environments.
A constant interest and reference in his work has been architecture and city space, from the 'psychogeographic' city-based projects of his early work to the spaces he currently lives in and encounters on a daily basis.
He sees the city and its endless surfaces and built structures as his source material, living in an area that combines residential, industrial, municipal and touristic spaces he feeds off these environments noting aspects of the public and private spaces, its material surfaces, colours and changing light that act as a constant backdrop to his daily life.
These experiences filter into his studio practice, an open- ended process where he generates collections and series of works through an exploratory process.
He sees his work as 'constructing' spaces as much as paintings, setting up an active working space in his studio, where he assembles materials and colours that lead to his paintings and installations.
The emerging works reflect various time spans and edits, re uses and repurposing of materials, working on many pieces at the same time he builds large collections of related works.

Can I negotiate the price of an artwork?
For some artworks, you can negotiate the price. If the price of the work is negotiable, you have a “Make an offer” button under the “Buy this work” one.
To submit your offer, you must make a payment of the desired amount. Your offer will then be forwarded to the gallery, which reserves the right to accept or reject it. If your offer is accepted, it means that your order is confirmed by the gallery and they will prepare the artwork for shipment. If your offer is rejected, you will be refunded the total amount paid automatically. The gallery can also propose a counter-offer for the acquisition of the artwork.

Where can I have my order delivered?
Artsper delivers worldwide!
However, please note that once your order reaches its destination, it may be subject to VAT or other customs fees. These charges are beyond our control and you will be responsible for paying them (this is indicated at the ‘checkout’ first step).
Select the delivery address of your choice. Please make sure that someone is present to receive your order.
If your billing address is different to your delivery address you can specify this at the checkout.
Return and cancellation
You can return the artwork without needing to provide a reason or pay a penalty fee up to 14 days after receiving your order.
In the case that the right of withdrawal is exercised in the aforementioned time frame, the price of the artwork(s) purchased and the shipping costs will be reimbursed by us as soon as the gallery has received the artwork and notified us.
Artsper will manage the return of the work and will bear the cost of returns (which will either be paid by you and refunded by Artsper or directly paid by Artsper).
The artwork must be returned in perfect condition and in its original packaging (or equivalent).
