Presentation

Noara Quintana (b.1986, Florianópolis, BR) is a Brazilian visual artist based in São Paulo. Her sculptural practice seeks to relate notions of identity to the geopolitics of everyday materials and forms.

One of Noara's recent projects 'Concrete Mirror' proposed an ethnographic and artistic intervention with the immigrant Brazilian community of Paris, developing the materiality of concrete as a principal conceptual thread. This project built on the work 'Form under duress', elaborated at two separate residencies in Germany (BetOnest and GlogauAir, in Brandenburg and Berlin respectively), in which Noara experimented with the varying degrees of inflexibility and plasticity of objects and materials, generating a symbolic play between notions of freedom and the conservative on the one hand, and movement and sedimentation on the other. This focus on materiality and its intersection with the ethnographic alludes to Brazil's volatile political situation and Noara's practice seeks to engage with the emergence of a political imaginary at the frontier, exploring how subjectivity and resistance intersect and take form.
