Presentation

Sarah Sky was born in Paris, but spent most of her childhood in Casablanca - a city on the sea, known for being a melting pot of cultures. She later studied Literature in New York City, and then moved to Guatemala, after traveling around Latin America and falling in love with its volcanoes and perpetual sun.

She considers herself a nomad, and her art is heavily influenced by the countries she has called home - the earth tones of Moroccan pottery, the pop art and fashion models of New York, the vibrant colors of Guatemalan street markets.

Sarah works in acrylic and mixed media, and is known for her drip technique and for her portraits of women, painted in a whimsical, bold style. Her most iconic pieces are of messy buns - which she often wears - and her strokes are expressive and full of movement.

When asked about how she approaches a blank canvas, she refers to a quote by J. D. Salinger: “How do you know what you are going to do until you do it? The answer is, you don't." She likes to discover pieces as she is painting them - she loves the element of surprise, and her process is organic - colors inform textures, which bring about layers - a riot of techniques clash in one harmonious end result. What emerges on the surface is the image, a face, order breaking though.

“For me it's not about painting every detail - it's about it feeling right. The composition, the balance. In an economy of brush strokes I am constantly seeking the sweet spot between chaos and order, between saying too little and saying too much.

Each painting speaks just enough and leaves just enough obscured that the viewer has the agency to decide what it means for them."

Of her notable accomplishments, Sarah debuted in JUANNIO 2020, the most important art auction in Latin America, where her piece tripled in price.
