Biography
Born 1989 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania
Oana Maria Pop (b. 1989) is a Romanian mixed media artist working with oil and acrylic on canvas, industrial silicone and photography. Her practice entails depictions of the neighbourhoods she grew up in and other environs that made an impression on her. The protagonist within the spaces she documents is the human form and its marks left by particular extrinsic experiences. In the past few years, Oana's work centred around the study of the representation of women in arts and society and the criticism of upholding rape myths, domestic violence and other forms of abuse against women and young girls.
She is a PhD candidate at the University of Fine Arts and Design, Cluj-Napoca, and is represented by IAGA Contemporary Art gallery.
For her BA and MA degrees, she investigated the subject of R.E.M. dreaming as a commentary for the 80s and 90s generations in contemporary Romania and on Romanian consumerism depicted through a visual metaphor of the act of eating. She was awarded an Erasmus scholarship in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia and in Berlin at Tanya Leighton Gallery.
Presently, she is undertaking an artistic residency in Berlin granted by Urban Nation Museum and Stiftung Berliner Leben, exploring media linguistics and analysing the written use of language in the press reports of domestic violence and femicide.
