Inspired by Ed Ruscha
The artist Ed Ruscha has had a prolific career spanning from the 1950s that continues into the present day. Ruscha was born into a Roman Catholic family in Omaha, Nebraska. Having received his education in the Chouinard Art Institute, Ruscha took a job as a layout artist for the Carson-Roberts Advertising Agency in Los Angeles after graduation. Ruscha first became known for his small collages in which he mixed words and images from advertisements and other sources from everyday life.
Loosely aligned with the Abstract Expressionist movement, Ruscha's interest in everyday depictions of life, essentially that of the American dream. His affiliation to Pop Art led him to draw inspiration from his Los Angeles home and other American cityscapes. He is known for creating images that explore the banality of urban life against the urban, cosmopolitan backdrop of American cities. His work also explores the subject of the power of discourse and of the English language in terms of artistic expression which owes to his background in advertising. Another theme present in his work is the sublime found in both natural and man-made landscapes. Discover a selection of works inspired by Ruscha and delve into this American dream-inspired landscape of bodies of work.
