“The Invisible Guest" by contemporary French artist Natalya Mougenot is a large, striking painting (70 x 100 cm / 27.5 x 39.5 in) that blends figurative and abstract styles. This vibrant and colorful artwork explores the modern woman's relationship with identity, emotion, and the intimate objects of everyday life. Rendered in expressive brushstrokes and bold hues, it transforms a familiar domestic scene into a thought-provoking still life and portrait, perfect for collectors of contemporary, modern, and abstract art.

In this composition, a faceless figure stands beside a chair and a small table, on which a blue bottle and two glasses rest. The figure, dressed in a pink top and green shorts, pops against the soft, peach-hued background, creating a striking visual contrast. The absence of facial features and the title “The Invisible Guest" evoke a presence that is felt but unseen—a silent companion, a memory, or an aspect of the self. The painting invites viewers to reflect on identity, absence, and the emotional resonance of everyday objects, transforming ordinary domestic elements into symbols in a poetic narrative.

This work marks a new direction in Mougenot's practice, where human figures merge seamlessly with the language of still life. Ordinary spaces become emotional mirrors, where color carries psychological meaning and form becomes a vessel for introspection. The combination of simplicity and bold expressive brushwork produces a compelling visual story, encouraging contemplation of both the environment and the self.

Mougenot's style shows the influence of Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, and David Hockney. From Matisse, she draws the expressive power of color and harmony in interior spaces; from Gauguin, the pursuit of emotion beyond realism; and from Hockney — whose 2025 exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton inspired her — a fascination with personal space, narrative composition, and the vibrant geometry of modern life.

Connected to metamodernism, Mougenot's work oscillates between playfulness and introspection, irony and sincerity. In “The Invisible Guest," this balance is palpable: a colorful, intimate scene that encourages viewers to explore what is present and what is unseen, what is visible and what remains private.

As Natalya Mougenot explains: “I believe authenticity is what art lacks most today. We play roles, we curate appearances, but art must remain a space where truth still exists."

“The Invisible Guest" is a visual manifesto of authenticity, inviting viewers to see themselves not through perfection, but through honesty, presence, and emotional depth — a unique and captivating artwork for collectors of contemporary figurative and abstract art.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
