Monumental sculpture is characterized by its large size, often towering over viewers and making a striking visual impact. These sculptures are frequently found in public collections and urban spaces, where their grandeur enhances the surrounding environment. Many monumental sculptures are also displayed in outdoor settings, becoming iconic landmarks that engage with architecture. As integral parts of buildings, these sculptures must adhere to strict guidelines concerning balance, stability, and sustainability to ensure their longevity and safety.
The importance of monumental sculpture is celebrated annually through the renowned Monumenta exhibition, held since 2007 at the Grand Palais in Paris. This prestigious event showcases the work of internationally acclaimed artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren, and Louise Bourgeois. These artists, known for their innovative and awe-inspiring creations, highlight the lasting appeal of monumental sculpture as a powerful medium in the contemporary art world.
Whether integrated into urban landscapes or exhibited in renowned spaces, monumental sculptures continue to captivate audiences with their scale, artistic expression, and timeless relevance.

A sculpture is considered a "monumental sculpture" if it has been produced on a large scale. For historical sculptures, sculptures of humans are generally considered large-scale if they are around half life-size, whereas contemporary sculptures tend to be considered monumental when produced on a much larger scale.
The term "monumental" in art covers a wide range of art forms It refers to both large-scale artworks, and art that is intended to harmonise alongside the environment that it was created for in both theme and design. These works can include frescoes, mosaics, and stained-glass windows.
A famous example of monumental sculpture is Maman by Louise Bourgeois, a 9-meter-tall spider statue created by the artist in 1999.
