문신 Moon Shin MMCA Museum Collection
Moon Shin (1923-1995) is a painter and sculptor from South Korea, he settled in Paris with the gallery owner Lia Grambihler who influenced his career by encouraging him to abandon the figurative painting of his beginnings and to turn to abstraction in order to excel in it. It is thanks to the work and benevolent protection of Lia Grambihler that it will be propelled to the international level. Once renowned thanks to his long stay in the Latin Quarter of Paris, with his exhibitions, at the Musée des Sables de Barcarès, in Paris and in France, he returned to South Korea around 1980 and his Museum in Masan was inaugurated in 1994 so that he can present his works there in a lasting manner. It is present in the largest international public collections and at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul. He was part of the South Korean selection during the Arts Olympiads organized by the Galerie Lise Cormery for the French National Olympic and Sports Committee in 1991 and 1992 in Paris, on the occasion of the 1992 Winter Olympics in France. . This followed the Seoul Arts Olympics where the city created for this occasion a painting museum and an outdoor monumental sculpture museum, where you can discover a monumental sculpture of Moon Shin, who represented South Korea among all international artists invited from all over the world to exhibit and represent 20th century art. This happy initiative of the Art Olympics in Seoul in 1988 was inspired by Lia Grambihler to President Park. In 2015 and 2016 during the Seoul Paris Seoul exhibition at the Cernuschi Museum dedicated to contemporary Korean artists who worked in France, attracted from the 1950s by the cultural influence of Paris, the latter studied in the capital, integrated to French artistic circles and have, through their work, actively participated in the revival of Korean painting as well as its diffusion in Europe, in the relationships between Korean artists and the Paris school, Kim Tschangyeul, Lee Ungno, Moon Shin, with works from the Cernuschi Museum, Museum of Asian Arts in Paris National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul.
