Pauline-Rose Dumas

The artist's first project with the Gallery, “Entre-temps” is the opportunity to introduce the Art Paris public to the rich and poetic work of Pauline-Rose Dumas who explores, through he intermediary of the common thread of the line - whether it is of metal, embroidery or charcoal -, the links which unite the a priori contradictory practices of forging, drawing, photography and textiles. Graduated from Beaux-Arts de Paris with congratulations from the jury in 2022 (workshop of Tatiana Trouvé) and from Chelsea College of Arts in textile design in 2019, Pauline-Rose Dumas offers a new way of appropriating space by playing with scales, stretching lines. Through the coexistence of works and the tools necessary for their creation, the artist brings the space of the workshop into the exhibition space. Its large wall and sculptural installations offer a singular and strong appropriation of space which resonates with the themes in the spotlight this year, Fragiles utopias, a look at the French scene by Eric de Chassey and Art & Craft by Nicolas Trembley. The works from the “Rebours” and “Objet au meter” series are central to the artist’s approach: they bring together the art of blacksmithing, photography and textiles.

By zooming in on the photos of wallpaper, plaster and natural surfaces that she took, the artist finds a certain abstraction and recovers the thread of the image's composition through the pixel aspect of the photograph. From then on, assembly and sewing work begins to create a poetic patchwork supported by forged steel tools, scissors or exaggeratedly sized needles. Sometimes even, the textile serves as a support, a pedestal for the tool, reversing the roles and places pre-assigned to certain materials, a reflection which places the artist in the wake of the Supports/Surfaces movement. In his sculptures entitled “Initials”, scissors and needles stretched, deformed and increased tenfold are supported by a piece of fabric placed on the ground, serving as a base for the sculpture. After his notable participation in the group exhibitions “Les Furtifs” (Jacques Prévert workshop) and “Invisibles” (Ghost Gallery) in 2023, this Solo Show at Art Paris will also echo the artist's latest research during his residency in New York with the NARS Foundation which ended in January 2024. The works of Pauline-Rose Dumas joined the collections of the Thalie Foundation (Brussels) and the European Investment Bank of Luxembourg (residence of the artist at the city of arts in 2022). At the invitation of Pascal Yonet and Béatrice Josse, she created an in situ work outdoors in the Vents des Forêts art center in the Meuse (inauguration in July 2024).
