Presentation

Maria Qamar was born in 1991 in Karachi, Pakistan from an Indian mother and a Bangladeshis father. When she turned 9, her family emigrated to Canada, where Maria grew up and experienced prejudice and bullying against South Asian children in her school, especially in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. So as she later recalled, 'I started going home and drawing comics about these experiences. But I would change the outcome. In my comics I always got the last laugh.'

Maria started her artistic career five years ago after she was fired from an advertising company and decided to share some of her doodles on Instagram under the name of Hatecopy, which indicates her feelings for her former field.

Qamar developed her signature style back in 2015 with a simple drawing on lined paper of a woman tearfully admitting, “I burnt the rotis." She shared the work on Instagram with the caption “what if Lichtenstein parodied Indian soap operas."

Maria became an Instagram sensation creating Bollywood-beautiful women paintings with cartoon ironic speech bubbles that spoke to the trials and tribulations of 21st-century Desi life facing the challenges of being a South Asian millennial.

On August 1st  2019 Maria Broke Into the New York Art World with Her first U.S. solo exhibition FRAAAANSHIP at RICHARD TAITTINGER GALLERY which got acclaimed by the art critics New York Times,  Forbes, Vice, TimeOut, Artnet News

We are thrilled to present you some recent available works done by Maria Quamar showcasing an interactive experience of the artist's fight against the inequalities that women, especially of color, still have to endure in society today.
