Martine Chassé

Born in Sainte-Marie de Beauce, Martine Chassé is a contemporary Canadian painter.

After completing her bachelor's degree in administrative sciences at the University of Ottawa, she set out on a self-taught artistic journey.

From her house perched on the hills of the valley de la Chaudière in Beauce, she discovered the uniqueness of the landscape that surrounded her. This sweet place where rivers, plains, valleys and forests gathered. From there, her interest in painting was born. She soon realized that painting would be much more than a hobby, and she started working as a professional artist in 2008.

Inspired and driven by expressionism, she has a keen interest in the work of Canadian artists such as Lawren Harris and Franklin Carmichael of the famous Group of Seven. Her roaring, sometimes fawn colours, applied in large strokes, radiate with dazzling and daring glare. Intense and vibrant, her works surprise and bring a new perspective to the landscape through the nearly graphic representation she makes of it. The chiaroscuro she paints creates an atmosphere that transports us into that moment of calm, tranquility and resourcing we seek and so often miss in our hectic lives.

Painting is her language, her means of expression. Over time, she acknowledged that her artistic approach was, in fact, a constantly evolving process that cannot be rigidly fixed in time. It is a long journey that allows a deeper insight into oneself. Each day lived enriches this approach with a nuance, a different hue, as subtle as it may be. She understands that it is the sum of our experiences that shapes us, defines us and reveals us our own unique and authentic nature. This whole baggage is inevitably transposed into her works.

Martine was awarded the grand prize in the 2012 Desjardins Art Competition of the Marius-Barbeau Museum (concours d'œuvres d'art Desjardins du Musée Marius-Barbeau).

Her works are part of several private and public collections in Quebec, Ontario, United States and Europe.
