Presentation

Caroline Rivalan studied at first stage costume in Paris then moved to Nice, where she obtained her DNSEP at Villa Arson, after having also attended the Escuela from Las Artes, Mexico City.

"My work is based on hybrid constructions with a will to transfigure the real, using different processes such as de-contextualization of objects, overprinting, transposition of several genres (temporal and stylistic).

My projects in outdoor space (around the landscape) or in interior space (often marked by a decadent bourgeois universe) focus on the issue of gender perception and confusion.

Through different mediums and their mode of representation, my work pushes the questioning on the question of values, precarious, time passing ..."

The materials are borrowed either from the building or the bourgeois interior. Ruins, debris, residues, fragments are brought to light in a universe that frees itself from reality, which overturn the values and transform the vestiges of a past era to show that nothing is fixed. The interior space develops in a workshop practice, with the idea of reconstructing a mental landscape giving way to the intimate, with a production of objects and images, a kind of "Room to self" (Virginia Woolf).

The wallpapers are diverted, coated with residues, paint, tar, on which are stuck floral motifs of soft furnishings, voluntarily kitsch to highlight the spirit of a certain class elite past.

As for the outdoor space, it is approached as a project registered in the public space, totally built and thought of in adequacy with the landscape (urban or natural) and with its interaction with the spectator. The interior and exterior complement each other and join the same.

Concerns about the landscape (intimate or public) and the freedom of perception and interpretation. Work "small hand" and "DIY" combine to give birth to a furious workshop practice. By DIY she understands the definition of Lévi-Strauss in his introduction of "The Wild Thought": the use of a devious way, developed in a closed universe where the rule is: "do with the means of the edge".
