Hajime Sorayama

Hajime Sorayama is celebrated for his alluring airbrushed depictions of humanoid robots that delve into notions of femininity and beauty. Inspired by pinup imagery, Sorayama introduced the inaugural volume of his distinctive "Sexy Robot" series featuring chromium-plated figures in 1983. Fast forward several decades, and these remarkable pieces have fetched prices exceeding $500,000. Sorayama initiated his professional journey in advertising, later venturing into Hollywood as a freelance artist contributing to the visual aspects of sci-fi films.

The spotlight found Sorayama in 1995 when Penthouse began showcasing his illustrations in a monthly column. Despite his niche fame for creating empowered cyborgs, conveying a sense of empowerment rather than objectification, Sorayama has also garnered mainstream commercial success. Sony, recognizing his talent, engaged him to design the initial concepts for its robotic dog AIBO, which went on to win the prestigious grand prize at Japan’s Good Design Award in 1999.

Beyond the realm of illustration, Sorayama has collaborated with influential figures in the fashion industry, including Thierry Mugler and Dior. These collaborations have expanded the reach of his artistic vision into the domains of wearable art, sculpture, and performance, showcasing the versatility and broad appeal of his creative prowess.
