Artwork location: France

Here the rhizome is an image illustrating a proposal by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari on the non-hierarchical representation of knowledge in opposition to the traditional organization in tree structure. In this proposal all the elements of the whole on which the classification is concerned have the same value and each element can influence another without subordination. Gérard Fromanger gives in the series "Rhizomes, pastels-café" a plastic interpretation of this proposal taking as a starting point a subject traditionally treated in a very hierarchical way, taxonomy. This networked organization will later be found in pastel portraits as well as in the series "Rhizomes, peinture-cafe" and "Bastille-dérives". Like many major works, the series «Rhizomes, pastel, café» met with a large success of esteem but was not immediately recognized by the general public. Over time, however, it has found its place among collectors or institutions and is now almost exhausted.

It announces a technique of drawing that the artist was going to develop and of which he continues to explore the possibilities today. The whole series is glued on canvas because the original paper was a printing paper with exceptional graphic qualities but fragile. It was therefore necessary to strengthen it to ensure its perenniality. The starting point of the drawings is made of coffee stains that lines of pastel emphasize or contradict. The latter constitute an intertwining of roots, hence the name «rhizomes». The colored dominant of the set is expressed in terms of heat or cold. At the point of convergence of the «rhizomes» comes an animal chosen for the compatibility of its aspect to be inscribed in this point of convergence. For the short story at the time of the realization of this series, Gérard Fromanger was retained in his Tuscan house and distracted his mind by the observation of the surrounding fauna and mainly birds, object for him of a sort of fascination. It is these meditations in situ that are most often inscribed in the nodes of the rhizomes.

Anecdotally it can also be noted that the pieces are indicated on the back for dimensions of 102 by 71 cm whereas their reality is 101 by 72 cm.

Note: the Pompidou Center owns two artworks of this series.

Master Artists

Born in 1939, Gérard Fromanger is a French painter, photographer and visual artist.

Not adhering to the traditional image of beauty and other conventional concepts, Gérard Fromanger quickly left the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and preferred to follow Robert Lesbounit's evening classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

He was noticed by César who lent him his workshop and followed him for two years. This relationship allowed Gérard Fromanger to meet other artists such as Jacques Prévert and the Giacometti brothers. He joined the Narrative Figuration movement and participated in the creation of New History. In the 1960s, he became an essential figure on the art scene.

Founder of the Atelier des Beaux-Arts in May 1968 and director of film tracts in collaboration with Jean-Luc Godard, Gérard Fromanger diversified and became involved with the world of cinema. Then he turns to photography in order to transcribe reality from his point of view through images.

The links he creates with different artists, writers, philosophers and musicians are for him a great source of inspiration, without which his work would not have evolved.

Gérard Fromanger continues to find himself at the forefront, among others in 2015 with his stained glass project for the Romanesque church of Anzy-le-Duc, which divided opinion.

The Center Georges Pompidou, Paris dedicated the Gérard Fromanger exhibition to him in 2016, curated by Michel Gauthier. In 2018, Laurent Greilsamer published the book Fromanger - Of all the colors, Entretiens. The same year, the artist inaugurated the Center Pompidou cycle “Un jour, une oeuvre" with the presentation of his work In China, at Hu-Xian in Villeneuve la Garenne. Gérard Fromanger died on June 18, 2021 in Paris.
