Aujourd'hui technique photographique parmi tant d'autres, il faut rappeler que la photographie noir et blanc fut pendant plusieurs décennies le seul type de photographie possible. C'est sans doute la raison pour laquelle elle reste associée à l'histoire et au passé.
C'est dans les années 1830 que Nièpce trouve le procédé pour fixer des images sur des plaques d'étain. Trois ans plus tard, Louis Daguerre puis François Arago prolongent ses recherches pour finalement inventer le daguerréotype. En imprimant une image sur une plaque d'argent exposée à la lumière, cet outil est à l'origine de la photographie moderne.
Ainsi, les premières photographies qui voient le jour sont en noir et blanc. Si la photographie est à ses origines simplement utilisée pour la recherche, elle se démocratise ensuite avec l'ouverture d'ateliers de daguerréotypistes, immortalisant les visages de la bourgeoisie, puis de l'ensemble de la population. Les célébrités ne sont pas en reste car des photographes capturent leurs portraits, comme l'a fait Jean-Loup Sieff tout au long de sa carrière plus d'un siècle plus tard.
Les premières photographies en couleur ne tardent pas à suivre. La technique est inventée dès 1860, mais elle ne se répand vraiment qu'un siècle plus tard. Entre temps, des artistes mémorables font leurs preuves en photographie d'art. La photographie de rue, par exemple, marque fortement le tendance du 20ème siècle avec des photographes comme Robert Doisneau, Brassai, et Henri Cartier-Bresson. Tous trois sont des maîtres de la photo volée et capturent des scènes éphémères. Parfois teintées d'humour, parfois romantiques, parfois incongrues, elles nous font voyager dans une époque révolue, provoquant souvent un sentiment de nostalgie à la vision de ces moments rares et fragiles.
Aux États-Unis, c'est l'humaniste Walker Evans qui s'impose comme le chef de file de la photographie noir et blanc en photographiant le quotidien de l'Amérique moderne. Un peu plus tard, Robert Frank va lui aussi documenter les visages de l'Amérique, et surtout des Américains à travers de magnifiques clichés en noir et blanc, à la composition singulière.
Bien sûr, la photographie noir et blanc ne se cantonne pas à la représentation de scènes quotidiennes. Elle peut également sublimer les paysages, comme le démontrent les prises de vue de Kasra. Le noir et le blanc se mêlent d'ailleurs parfaitement à la pose longue pour créer une effet de douceur, de flottement et d'écoulement du temps tout à fait exceptionnel. On pourrait aussi citer Michael Kenna et Ricky Cohete qui excellent particulièrement dans ce domaine.
Certaines œuvres fascinent par la complémentarité parfaite de ces deux couleurs : le noir qu'on associe souvent au néant et à la tristesse, et le blanc qui est associé à la lumière et l'espoir. En Occident en tout cas, car elle peut avoir un sens tout à fait contraire dans d'autres cultures comme au Japon. L'union de ces deux nuances accentue les contrastes et met en avant les formes de manière sobre et élégante. Elle dirige souvent notre attention vers un sujet unique.
Souvent employé pour provoquer un sentiment de nostalgie, le noir et blanc inscrit inconsciemment les œuvres dans l'histoire en faisant passer un message intemporel, figé dans le temps.

En photographie, le noir et blanc signifie que toute couleur a été supprimée de l'image, ne laissant que des nuances de gris allant du noir au blanc. Cette opération peut être réalisée numériquement ou à l'aide d'un film noir et blanc.
De nombreux photographes et artistes utilisent la photographie en noir et blanc parce qu'elle élimine la distraction de la couleur d'une image. Cela permet d'attirer davantage l'attention sur des éléments de l'image tels que l'expression faciale ou le geste du sujet, la composition, ou les formes et les textures.
La photographie en noir et blanc est généralement prise à l'aide du même matériel que la photographie en couleur (s'il s'agit d'un film, il faut utiliser un film noir et blanc), mais les artistes peuvent optimiser leurs résultats en recherchant des images à fort contraste, des sources de lumière fortes et des textures intéressantes.
