"Quería domar el mundo. Pero también deseaba apasionadamente conocer y comprender la naturaleza humana, saber qué había dentro de nuestros cuerpos. Para ello, diseccioné cadáveres durante toda la noche, desafiando la prohibición del Papa. Nada me repele. (...) Lo que he buscado al final, a través de toda mi obra, y especialmente a través de mi pintura, lo que he buscado toda mi vida, es comprender el misterio de la naturaleza humana". Leonardo da Vinci, Cuaderno, siglo XVI.Ya Leonardo da Vinci hizo del cuerpo el objeto de todos sus experimentos. Disecar, estudiar y comprender para adquirir un conocimiento completo de la anatomía humana es, según él, un paso obligado para poder representar perfectamente los miembros de los cuerpos que pinta y dibuja. Poco a poco, la imagen tradicional de la figura humana se tambalea para dar paso a nuevas formas de interpretación del cuerpo. Los artistas contemporáneos, cuestionando los códigos figurativos tradicionales, atacan libremente la representación humana, para dar una imagen dislocada, geometrizada, distorsionada, desfigurada. El cuerpo, un objeto deseado, fantaseado, soñado, transformado, deformado. Pintar, fotografiar o esculpir un cuerpo es un paso obligado en la creación de un artista. Muchos dicen que se puede apreciar el talento de un artista por su control de la complejidad de las formas humanas. Así, se podía adivinar en los recortes de papel de Matisse que el artista dominaba perfectamente el cuerpo humano. La representación del cuerpo humano en el arte occidental es fundamental: en primer lugar porque la representación del cuerpo implica su propia representación y afirma así la existencia de su propio ser y su rivalidad con la naturaleza que lo rodea. Al principio de la historia del arte, los únicos cuerpos representados eran los de los dioses, los seres sobrenaturales y los espíritus que tomaban forma humana. El cuerpo, desnudo o vestido, es uno de los temas más representados en el arte occidental y uno de los que más reacciones y controversias provoca (se piensa aquí en el escándalo causado por L'Origine du Monde de Courbet, Le Déjeuner sur l'Herbe de Renoir,...).El cuerpo es, pues, objeto de muchos temas y su historia es rica y antigua. Está íntimamente ligada a la religión, donde el Verbo se hace carne en la Encarnación. El deseo que despierta en los artistas es también el tema de predilección de muchos de ellos. El objeto de belleza es superado por el cubismo, porque está desfigurado, hibridizado. Ya no despierta ninguna verosimilitud ni pretende respetar ninguna proporción. Por último, el cuerpo toma forma en el espacio. Se hace uno con su entorno, se convierte en el soporte del artista, como ocurre con los modelos de Klein. Es tangible en los eventos artísticos, en el land art, en las inmersiones de las pinturas de Rothko. Es objeto de una inspiración inagotable y de un debate eterno.
