Édition Pop Art
Bien qu'apparu dans les années 50 au Royaume-Uni, le pop art continue d'inspirer mondialement les artistes et le public, toujours aussi friands des sérigraphies en couleurs.
Le terme « pop art » vient de « popular art » et est l'un des mouvements artistiques charnières du 20e siècle. Il se caractérise tant par les sujets traités dans les œuvres que dans les techniques pour réaliser celles-ci.
Les figures représentées ne sont pas nobles. On peint et dépeint la culture de masse, la société de consommation et les idoles populaires. On place d'ailleurs souvent le pop art en opposition à l'expressionnisme abstrait, style très en vogue à l'époque, pour déposséder les élites de l'exclusivité en matière artistique.
Le pop art est multiple, et touche toutes les sphères créatives: la peinture, la mode, les arts plastiques (sculpture, collage…). Il répond à certains critères esthétiques au niveau pictural permis grâce aux innovations industrielles, la sérigraphie notamment. Il s'agit d'un processus d'imprimerie impliquant l'utilisation d'un pochoir pour reproduire plusieurs fois la même image sur la toile.
Comme bien souvent dans l'histoire de l'art, ces prouesses techniques n'eurent guère de succès à leurs débuts et furent méprisées par l'intelligentsia. Il faut attendre l'arrivée sur la scène artistique de deux précurseurs de génie, figures majeures du mouvement artistique : Andy Warhol et Roy Lichtenstein. Grâce à eux, la peinture contemporaine prend un virage à 180°C. La valeur ne s'estime plus à la rareté de la pièce et au choix élaboré du sujet.
On estime souvent que les deux hommes ont été influencés par l'exposition de 1960-1961 des artistes de l'avant-garde européenne exposés à New York. Ils produisent cette année-là des œuvres inspirées des comics dont « Look Mickey », œuvre phare de Lichtenstein. Néanmoins, leurs styles évoluent vite et ils empruntent tous deux des chemins très différents.
Tandis que Roy Lichtenstein persiste dans le genre de la planche de bande-dessinée qu'il s'approprie, Andy Warhol annonce les débuts de l'art contemporain post-moderne en utilisant les objets du quotidien pour modèle.
Ayant commencé sa carrière dans la publicité, il s'émancipe en tant qu'artiste en reprenant les codes et les produits américains vulgaires de base et en les sublimant. On pense évidemment aux conserves de soupes Campbell's, aux canettes de Coca-Cola, au ketchup Heinz…
La critique assumée et souvent amusée de la société de consommation par le pop art se poursuit aussi avec la représentation des acteurs et chanteurs élevés au rang d'idoles auxquelles on voue un culte absolu. Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor...Toutes les grandes stars des années 60 sont immortalisées dans des couleurs vives et des formats rappelant l'esthétique des affiches publicitaires plus ou moins kitsch.
À l'image du dadaïsme de Duchamp avant lui, le pop art est porté par une volonté de désacralisation de l'art ou du moins de renverser la vision qu'on pouvait en avoir jusqu'alors. Il devient accessible au commun des mortels, reprenant les fétiches qu'il maîtrise déjà.
