La tournure de l'expression « réalisme magique » a été inventée par le photographe, historien et critique d'art allemand Franz Roh en 1925. Il l'a utilisée pour décrire les peintures réalistes modernes qui présentaient des sujets fantastiques ou oniriques comme sujets principaux. Le terme trouve son origine dans son livre Postexpressionnisme, Réalisme magique.
Dans la culture européenne du 20ème siècle, le réalisme magique s'inscrit dans un mouvement réactionnaire contre l'art moderne, connu sous le nom de « retour à l'ordre ». Ce mouvement dans les arts était largement fondé autour d'une philosophie issue de l'héritage de la Première Guerre mondiale. Parmi les artistes du réalisme magique figurent Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio et d'autres en Italie, ainsi qu'Alexander Kanoldt et Adolf Ziegler en Allemagne. Le réalisme magique est étroitement lié aux représentations oniriques du surréalisme et du néo-romantisme en France. Le terme est également utilisé pour décrire le travail de certains peintres d'outre-Atlantique dans les années 1940 et 1950, notamment Paul Cadmus, Philip Evergood et Ivan Albright. Il est aussi connu pour décrire les pratiques de la littérature, comme les écrits de Jorge Luis Borges et Gabriel García Márquez.
