Monumental sculpture is defined by its large size. Many of these sculptures are part of public collections or are integrated in urban spaces. Monumental sculptures are also sought after for being exhibited in outdoor spaces and seen in architecture. They are often integral part of buildings and have to follow certain rules regarding balance, stability and sustainability. Monumental sculpture is celebrated every year since 2007 by the famous Monumenta exhibition, at the Grand Palais in Paris. Artists such as Niki de Saint Phalle Anselm Kiefer, Richard Serra, Christian Boltanski, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren and Louise Bourgeois favor this impressive medium.
A sculpture is considered a "monumental sculpture" if it has been produced on a large scale. For historical sculptures, sculptures of humans are generally considered large-scale if they are around half life-size, whereas contemporary sculptures tend to be considered monumental when produced on a much larger scale.
The term "monumental" in art covers a wide range of art forms It refers to both large-scale artworks, and art that is intended to harmonise alongside the environment that it was created for in both theme and design. These works can include frescoes, mosaics, and stained-glass windows.
A famous example of monumental sculpture is Maman by Louise Bourgeois, a 9-meter-tall spider statue created by the artist in 1999.
