Josef Hoffmann (December 15, 1870 – May 7, 1956) was an Austrian architect and designer, a key figure in the Vienna Secession movement and co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. Born in Brtnice, Moravia (then part of Austria-Hungary), he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Otto Wagner, one of the pioneers of modern architecture.
In 1897, Hoffmann co-founded the Vienna Secession, an artistic movement that sought to break away from the dominant historical styles. In 1903, he established the Wiener Werkstätte alongside artist Koloman Moser, a workshop dedicated to the unification of art, craftsmanship, and design.
Among Hoffmann’s most significant architectural works are the Sanatorium Purkersdorf (1904–1905) and the Stoclet Palace in Brussels (1905–1911), considered a masterpiece of modern architecture and Art Deco. He also designed several private villas and interiors, including the Villa Skywa-Primavesi and the Ast Residence.
As a designer, Hoffmann created furniture, metalware, glassware, and textiles, characterized by clean geometric forms and functional aesthetics. His influence extended beyond Europe, contributing significantly to the evolution of modern design.
After World War II, he continued teaching and participating in various artistic initiatives until his death in 1956 in Vienna. His legacy remains influential in architecture and design, with his works exhibited in major museums worldwide.
