Explorations abstraites
L'art abstrait tel que nous le connaissons aujourd'hui trouve ses racines au 19ème siècle, lorsque les artistes ont commencé à privilégier l'imagination et l'inconscient par rapport à l'art purement figuratif. Au cours de cette période, l'art s'est détourné de l'idéalisation de ses sujets pour mettre l'accent sur leurs qualités émotionnelles et sensorielles. Les artistes du début du 20ème siècle ont poussé l'abstraction encore plus loin : au lieu de chercher à représenter la réalité tangible de manière abstraite, ils ont commencé à créer des œuvres totalement détachées du monde visible. Le premier « véritable » artiste abstrait connu est la peintre suédoise Hilma af Klint, qui a produit un certain nombre d'œuvres monumentales ancrées dans le spiritualisme. Parmi les autres artistes abstraits influents du 20ème siècle figurent Piet Mondrian, Vassily Kandinsky ou encore Mark Rothko.
Aujourd'hui, des artistes contemporains de toutes sortes perpétuent l'héritage de ces créateurs, en utilisant la couleur, la ligne et la forme pour produire des œuvres abstraites.
