Sculpture Nus
La sculpture de nu est un genre artistique à part entière, tout comme la sculpture animalière ou la sculpture abstraite. Elle consiste à représenter des humains peu ou pas vêtus, afin de montrer les détails du corps et de la peau. Traditionnellement, les modèles sont légèrement recouverts (par un drap, par exemple) et leurs organes génitaux sont cachés. Ainsi, l'art du nu ne renvoie pas à un dépouillement absolu ou une absence totale de parure. Il est plutôt un art de la suggestion et d'attention à l'anatomie des corps.
Même si le « nu » n'a été reconnu par la critique d'art comme un genre spécifique qu'à partir 20ème siècle, sa pratique est l'une des plus anciennes formes d'art connues. La « Vénus de Willendorf », réalisée vers 24 000 av. J-C (Paléolithique supérieur), est déjà un nu. Peu importe le degré de réalisme de cette œuvre, celui-ci n'a pas ici d'impact sur sa catégorisation. La taille de la poitrine et du ventre dans cette sculpture peut par exemple témoigner d'un certain idéal de la féminité ou alors être interprété comme des symboles de fécondité.
L'Europe et le Moyen-Orient ont vu une riche tradition de la sculpture de nu se développer. L'histoire de l'art retiendra surtout la production égyptienne et gréco-romaine, qui est notamment visible au musée du Louvre. Les nus grecs se développent surtout à partir du 6ème siècle avant J-C, et incarnent une certaine idée du beau. Les dieux, héros et athlètes sont les sujets favoris des artisans sculpteurs, qui les traitent parfois dans des dimensions monumentales.
Car le nu dit toujours quelque chose des canons de beauté d'une époque, et ce tout au long de l'histoire de l'art. Contrairement aux modèles préhistoriques, les personnages sculptés dans le marbre témoignent d'une volonté de représenter le corps humain de façon réaliste. Malgré cela, la sculpture continue de représenter une beauté idéalisée, car les différentes parties du corps et les proportions sont agencées selon des codes assez rigides.
Ensuite, c'est l'Empire romain antique qui prend goût à l'art de la sculpture de nu. Débute alors une très large mode de la copie, dans un but majoritairement décoratif. S'ensuite une longue période d'absence de productions de sculptures de nus, due à l'influence croissante de la religion chrétienne. Mais la Renaissance italienne redonnera ses lettres de noblesse à la sculpture de nu. On y redécouvre un moyen d'illustrer le beau et de glorifier l'humanité, comme étant le point terminal de la création.
Les artistes s'inspirent surtout de sujets mythologiques, qui servent parfois d'alibi à une étude approfondie de l'anatomie. Ainsi, des artistes illustres tels que Benvenuto Cellini ou Michel-Ange produisent des œuvres qui comptent aujourd'hui encore parmi les plus grands chefs-d'œuvre de l'art occidental.
Ce canon précédemment établi fera autorité jusqu'à la fin du 19ème siècle où une nouvelle vague de sculpteurs annonce déjà l'art moderne. La fidélité physique au modèle est abandonnée au profit de l'expressivité de l'œuvre et de la vision personnelle de l'artiste. Les travaux d'Auguste Rodin puis ceux, bien postérieurs, d'Alberto Giacometti sont des exemples particulièrement frappants de la rupture opérée avec le modèle néoclassique réaliste de la sculpture de nu.

Les trois principaux styles de sculpture sont l'architecture, les sculptures et les reliefs. Les sculptures sont créées en taillant dans un matériau, et les reliefs sont des sculptures où les éléments sculptés sont collés à un matériau de support.
Les artistes de la Renaissance ont souvent représenté le corps nu dans leurs œuvres, sous l'influence des sculptures classiques créées dans la Grèce antique. Les artistes étudiaient en profondeur les modèles vivants, dans le but de créer des représentations réalistes, dynamiques et surtout idéalisées du corps humain.
L'un des premiers exemples connus de sculpture représentant une figure féminine nue est Aphrodite de Knidos, la déesse de l'amour et de la beauté. La sculpture a été réalisée vers le 4ème siècle avant J.C. par le célèbre sculpteur Praxitèle d'Athènes.
