“Painting the soul of flamenco: gesture, memory, and emotion on canvas.”
Biography
José Luis Ponce (b. 1943, Palma de Mallorca) is a Spanish painter and former flamenco dancer based in Seville. Trained in Fine Arts from a young age, he left academia at 17 to pursue a professional career in flamenco, performing as a lead dancer in major Spanish companies. In 2002, he retired from dance to focus entirely on painting.
His expressive portraits—often depicting flamenco figures, bullfighters, and musicians—capture intensity, cultural memory, and emotion. Since 2008, he has exhibited widely in Spain and abroad, including shows in Madrid, Granada, Seville, Italy, and Morocco.
