Biography

Brice Marden (1938–2023) was an influential American artist known for his minimalist and abstract works that evolved over six decades. Born in Bronxville, New York, Marden studied at the Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts and later at the Yale School of Art, where he was influenced by abstract expressionism and the color field movement.

Early in his career, Marden became recognized for his monochromatic panels, often executed in subdued tones and wax-based paints, which conveyed a meditative quality. In the 1980s, his work shifted toward more dynamic compositions, inspired by calligraphy, Greek antiquity, and Asian art, incorporating intricate, flowing lines and layered textures.

Marden's ability to balance structure and spontaneity earned him critical acclaim. His works are held in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London. Widely regarded as a master of modern abstraction, Marden's art continues to influence contemporary painters.
