James Brown

James Brown (1951-2020) was an American painter, sculptor, draftsman, and engraver, renowned for his semi-figurative work inspired by cave art. Born in Los Angeles, he studied at Immaculate Heart College before attending the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris between 1973 and 1975. He divided his career between Paris and Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico.

His work was exhibited in prestigious institutions such as the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He also participated in notable group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1988.

James Brown was influenced by movements such as Art Brut and Abstract Expressionism. He received several accolades throughout his career, reflecting his significant impact on the contemporary art scene. His works combine various techniques, including painting, sculpture, and engraving, offering a profound exploration of the human condition through primitive and symbolic forms.
