Néo-expressionnisme
Le trans-avant-garde en Italie. Les Nouveaux Fauves en Allemagne. Émergeant en réaction aux styles hautement conceptualisés et minimalistes qui avaient dominé les années 1970, le mouvement néo-expressionniste s'est développé de manière significative à travers les États-Unis, l'Allemagne et l'Italie, comme un renouveau contemporain de la manière de faire expressionniste.
Ce style se caractérise par un retour radical à l'art figuratif et sensuel, à des représentations visuelles d'objets plus reconnaissables et à une utilisation très expressive de la couleur qui témoigne de la décadence et du consumérisme du monde de l'art d'après-guerre. Les coups de pinceau à haute texture et les récits émotifs sont au cœur de ce mouvement.
Les œuvres de Julian Schnabel, David Salle, Eric Fischl et Jean-Michel Basquiat ont souvent été étroitement associées à la prolifération du style néo-expressionniste aux États-Unis. Leurs expérimentations texturales, leurs photographies communicatives et leur utilisation audacieuse de la couleur et de la narration nous offrent aujourd'hui un aperçu indispensable de la trajectoire artistique contemporaine qui a suivi les années 1970.
Ailleurs dans le monde, les Italiens Sandro Chia et Francesco Clemente, ainsi que les Allemands Anselm Kiefer et Georg Baselitz, ont apporté des contributions importantes à ce style pictural et compositionnel peu orthodoxe.
