Portrait
Le portrait est l'une des plus anciennes thématiques qu'ait connue l'art, remontant jusqu'à l'époque de l'ancienne Egypte. L'histoire de l'art du portrait débute par des peintures réservées aux rois et aux dieux, observables seulement dans les tombeaux. Il est, aussi loin que la mémoire puisse puiser ses récits, intimement lié à la représentation de l'individu et introduit la notion de sujet. L'autoportrait suit la même histoire mais pas la même évolution. La Grèce Antique utilise le portrait comme représentation des Dieux. L'individualisation du sujet s'étend parmi les consciences, considérant d'abord les nobles, puis les classes plus populaires, comme le portrait retrouvé de la fresque de Pompéi de Terentius et de sa femme, propriétaires d'une boulangerie, en témoigne.
Il est cependant mis à mal avec l'expansion du Christianisme qui interdit aux artistes de peindre d'autres scènes que des scènes sacrées et disparaît pendant une période des formats défendus par les artistes.
Il faut attendre le XIVe et le XVe siècle pour assister à une véritable rupture avec les interdictions artistiques exigées par le Christianisme. Le portrait prend alors toute son ampleur avec la consécration de l'art flamand, qui connaît un rayonnement dans toute l'Europe, à laquelle seule l'Italie peut prétendre rivaliser. Les peintres flamands inventent une technique de représentation du portrait mêlant expériences, matières et une plus grande conscience de l'individu, s'inscrivant ainsi dans le réalisme artistique. L'artiste Jan Van Eyck met sa grande observation et patience à l'oeuvre dans ses portraits, l'ajout consécutif de détails donne une illusion presque parfaite de la réalité.
Le XVe siècle est celui de l'Italie, alors qu'elle dévoile des artistes et oeuvres qui révolutionnent la peinture comme Giotto, dont la puissance plastique et l'intensité de sa peinture marquent ses portraits.
Durant plusieurs siècles, la tendance a été à l'idéalisation afin de flatter les commanditaires qui se faisaient tirer le portrait. Puis peu à peu le portrait se démocratise et les artistes s'intéressent à d'autres personnages, moins riches et donc moins exigeants, délivrant des œuvres de plus en plus réalistes.
Le portrait suit les différentes évolutions de la peinture moderne et, au 20ème siècle, plutôt que de s'approcher de la vérité, les peintres utilisent le portrait comme un moyen d'expérimenter de nouvelles techniques et théories artistiques. Plutôt que d'être le reflet de la réalité et tenter d'approcher la vérité parfaite du sujet, le portrait devient l'objet d'un libre-court à l'imagination, laissant les artistes maîtres de leur expression et les spectateurs de leur interprétation.
Il existe aujourd'hui une énorme variété de portraits insolites qui ne veulent pas flatter leurs modèles mais laisser libre l'expression. Des visages défigurés, des collages surprenants, des formes à peine humaine ou même des créatures mi-humain mi-animal : tout est permis et la créativité déborde !
