C'est, dans les années 1830 que Nièpce trouve le procédé pour fixer des images sur des plaques d'étain. En 1833 à son décès, Louis Daguerre puis François Arago prolongent ses recherches pour finalement inventer le daguerréotype qui imprime une image sur une plaque d'argent exposée à la lumière. Ils inventent la photographie.
Les premières photographies voient le jour. À ses débuts, la photographie de portrait - ou la moindre photo de famille, nécessite tout un cérémonial et peut prendre des heures à mettre en scène en studio. Mais par la suite, grâce aux prouesses technologiques avec l'apparition d'appareils photo compacts comme les Leica puis plus tard les reflex numériques, les temps de pose réduisent considérablement et permettent la multiplication des clichés. Les techniques et procédés sont désormais multiples pour obtenir le résultat souhaité.
C'est dans cet esprit que se développe la photographie de scène de vie ou de vie domestique, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale dans les classes aisées et citadines. Vie de famille, vie de couple, vie de communauté, les artistes s'intéressent aux instants du quotidien (marriage, baiser, jeux d'enfants…). Les moments les plus simples comme les étapes les plus importantes de la vie sont ainsi immortalisés à l'argentique et cela donne de belles photos humanistes.
Dans ce genre si particulier de la photographie de scène de vie s'illustrent de grands photographes tels qu'Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, David Goldblatt ou encore Vivian Maier, pour ne citer qu'eux.
Vivian Maier est une photographe américaine née en 1926 à New-York. Nourrice professionnelle à Chicago, elle passe son temps libre à photographier le monde qu'il entoure - soit un total de près de 150 000 clichés. Ayant passé sa vie dans l'anonymat, son génie est finalement reconnu en 2007 pour tout son travail de photographie de scènes de vie.
Cofondateur en 1947 de l'agence Magnum avec David Seymour et Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson a été un véritable précurseur du photo-journalisme mais aussi un brillant photographe d'art. Il a révolutionné la photo en travaillant avec un matériel photo très léger. Il n'utilise ni trépied ni chambre et fonctionne sur un principe l'immédiateté. Pour lui, « l'appareil photo est avant tout un carnet de croquis ». La technique photo d'Henri Cartier-Bresson est unique et reconnaissable entre toutes. Aucun flash n'est jamais utilisé dans ses compositions, il ne se sert que de la lumière naturelle caractéristique de la photo de scène de vie. Aussi, les sujets d'un même cliché cohabitent mais bien souvent les personnages ne sont pas centrés dans les photos noir et blanc de Cartier-Bresson. Sa mise au point, son cadrage, et la profondeur de champs qu'il utilise sont autant de détails qui nous permettent de saisir la beauté des choses les plus simples du quotidien qu'il sublime.
