Presentation

Albert Gleizes is a French artist born in 1881 in Paris and died in 1953 in Avignon.

Around 1899, he joined his father's company as an apprentice, who owned an industrial design business for upholstery in the Sentiers quarter in Paris. Following this, he taught himself painting and rubbed shoulders with well known people like Jean Metzinger, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger and many more in Henri Le Fauconnier, the painter's studio.

In 1911, he exhibited his work with his Cubist friends at the Salon des Indépendants, and this triggered a scandal. In 1936, he collaborated with Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger and Léopold Survage to create murals during the International Exposition in Paris, and then with Jacques Villon and Sonia Delaunay for the Tuileries Fair.

The following year made an impact on the 20th century: Albert Gleizes and Jean Metzinger published "Du Cubisme", a first work devoted to the Cubist current and participated at the Salon d'Or.

He finally settled in the Ardèche region with his young wife and rented a house called Moly-Sabata in Sablons on the other side of the Rhone and got together a colony of artists and craftsmen wanting to run away from the industrial production's influence.

A first major retrospective of his work was set up in Lyon in 1940 in the chapel of Ampere high school, but the most marvelous one was organized between 1964 and 1965, and was presented at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the National Modern Art Museum in the city of Paris as well as the Museum am Ostwall in Dortmund. In 2001, a new retrospective was offered by the Picasso museum in Barcelona and the Fine Arts museum in Lyon, followed in 2002 by the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon.
