Presentation

Thomas Canto, known as well under the nickname "Dense", is a French artist born in 1979 in France.

A self-taught artist who has been in contact with art since his chilhood, Thomas Canto's work is imbued with a strong urban sensibility, even though his production can be described as eclectical and abstract, with futuristic aesthetics.

He first got inspired by the world of graffitti of Lyon, during the 90s, but he evolved and prefered to work in a studio and distance himself from the imposed figures of urban art. He kept nevertheless a certain influence from this period even in his current works, as we can see in the composition of his work or his dynamic search, which he combines with new techniques such as oil painting and photography.

Admiring the work of Yan Pei Ming's and Pierre Soulages, Thomas Canto studied the futuristic and constructivist movements and directed his artistic researches towards subjects of representation, speed, and perspective. He is very interested in the technical work of Zaha Hadid, Oscar Niemeyer and Jean Nouvel, and started doing on-site works and to deepen his research on the concept of space and about the multiple possibilities offered by the game of light reflections.

Thomas Canto explores urban art in all its forms and in all its diversity, He founded and directs the N2O Gallery in Lyon, where he exhibits the work of numerous artists of the contemporary urban scene.

He has made some installations such as those made for the former customs of Rome (Italy) during the Outdoor Festival, for Bund 18 in Shanghai (China) for the exhibition "Look Through" and then in 2015, in a more elaborated way for the Urban Art Biennale in Volklingen (Germany), and for the Mohamed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, in Rabat (Morroco).
