Presentation

Terry Richardson, born in New York in 1965, is an American fashion photographer. His mother, Norma Kessler, was an actress, and his father, fashion photographer Bob Richardson battled with schizophrenia and drug abuse. Terry had a difficult childhood, which later influenced his work. As a teenager, he moved to California, before returning to New York where he became involved with the underground scene, and progressively began to practice photography. At the time he wished to become a punk or a rock star, and played the bass in various bands, such as Signal Street Alcoholics, Doggy Style or Baby Fist.

The artist directed campaigns for prestigious brands such as Gucci, Hugo Boss or Miu Miu, and has also worked with famous models like Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne or Barbara Palvin, and other public figures including Barack Obama, Catherine Deneuve and many more. In 2013, he directed the music video for Miley Cyrus's single 'Wrecking Ball', which marked the beginning of a new era for the singer, radically changing her public image for a more scandalous and sulphurous one. Terry Richardson has also in the past regularly taken pictures for Vogue or Vanity Fair. In 2007, his Global Warming Campaign for Diesel was awarded a Silver Lion for Print at Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. In 2012, he held his first independent solo show, TERRYWOOD, at the OHWOW Gallery in Los Angeles.

Sexuality and nudity are recurring themes in Richardson's work, which he approaches with an audacious and quirky eye. He originally only photographed his subjects against a white background, but he progressively incorporated more and more colour into his work, and now works around more intricate compositions and staging. He also has a habit of posing himself with the subject he takes pictures of.

The photographer's work has been the source of numerous controversies, both around his art itself, and around himself. Some denounce his photographies as sexist, notably because of the overwhelming nudity of young female models in hyperssexualised portraits. He has also been accused of sexually assaulting or exploiting models during fashion shoots. Although Richardson always denied these accusations, they led many fashion brands and magazines, including the Condé Nast group (Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour…) to decide to no longer commission his work.

Terry Richardson is notably represented by the Galerie Perrotin.
