Goddess and Pillar of the Western Sky is a drawing created by the Iranian painter and poet Parimah Avani in 2023. India ink, acrylic and mixed media on traditional Japanese Kozo paper, with applied papyrus, 32 x 238 cm, Plettenberg, DE.

Exhibited in "Heroine's Journey" 2023, in the Gallery hall of the German bank "Sparkasse" presented by Werkstatt Plettenberg.

Winner of the "Werkstatt Plettenberg" scholarship and artistic residency in Germany, 2023. Hand-signed and dated with embossed stamp. From the -Wall Six- Pillars and Protectors of the Heavens series.

The artwork depicted the Goddess of the Western Sky with alchemical and mystical symbols and signs, through geometric shapes and miniature rebellious figures modeling an entire body of the goddess, to emphasize unity, cartoonish micro-macro themes in a poetic, in minimalist manner, moon, sun, archaic motifs and animals reminiscent of cave painting are characterized by expressive brushes. In a fusion of myth, alchemical symbolism and the archetypal Heroine's Journey, the works aim to transport viewers into the intricate realm of the "Heroine's Journey", an exhibition that encompasses the essence of unity, transformation and resistance, the enduring power of mythological narratives. Through a combination of limited colors, shapes and ancient symbolism, these works invite an odyssey that transcends the boundaries of culture, time and narrative. Inspired by Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Avani's works weave a narrative that celebrates the interconnectedness of all living beings. Avani uses a chosen palette of alchemical colors: gold, silver, bronze, tint and copper, representing metals and planets. Each color has a deep and symbolic meaning. Gold symbolizes the golden spirit and enlightenment, while silver links to the feminine aspect and associations with the moon goddess. Copper represents women and the essence of love. These colors create a narrative that resonates with universal themes of transformation and spirituality, mirroring the elevation of the soul through alchemical symbolism. His works apply visual storytelling in large scrolls. These figures draw inspiration from mythological narratives such as the Norse myth of Ymir and the Persian myth of Mashi and Mashyaneh. In Norse mythology, Ymir's colossal body is the origin of the various components of the world. From Ymir's body the various parts of the cosmos were formed, including the Earth (Midgard), the sky (Asgard) and the oceans (the giant's blood). Likewise, Mashi and Mashyaneh, the first human couple in Persian mythology, represent the microcosm of the universe. In several mythologies and belief systems,There are entities or figures similar to Ymir who play a role in the creation of the world. Inspired by Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, Avani's Heroine embarks on an adventure similar to the phases of the moon and the characteristics of Mother Earth, the stories of the Goddess and her belonging.

Her journey is marked by recurring motifs of death and rebirth to celebrate women's sacrifices through mythological symbolism. The heroine discovers, sacrifices herself, shines like a full moon and disappears, in a cyclical journey of transformation and self-discovery. These paintings portray the world as composed of numerous microcosmic entities, all intricately united, emphasizing the interconnectedness and interdependence of all life forms and elements of our cosmos. This series highlights how a body becomes a battlefield, a gold source of sacrifice, a silver source of resistance, copper as blood and women fighting for freedom. The Persian calligraphy style and knowledge of poetry allowed her to create a visual poem in an expressionistic style related to oriental calligraphy. Her works challenge oppression, torture, censorship and gender issues by applying oriental brushstrokes of calligraphy with ink as the primary tool.
