"There are trips that are not..."
It is with these words that the artist could describe the results of a residence in which he had the privilege of participating in Italy. Left to take advantage of the time of artistic sharing, he very quickly found himself immersed in an environment for which one is never really prepared. In the heart of Naples, in the middle of Scampia, a district for a long time the field of action of the Neapolitan mafia, he contributed to the mediation of the district with his artistic contribution.

Difficult task when told the story of this Neapolitan suburb still today the scene of frequent violence. The works carried out during this residency remained on the spot... this is why, on his return, he wished to preserve an image of this improbable universe and at the same time conducive to reflection. Scampia II is therefore the reflection of two opposing worlds with a backdrop of a message of hope for future generations...

Dominique Prévots, Scampia-II
Dominique Prévots

Dominique Prévots

France  • 1953

Discourse other than with words, this is the objective that Dominique Prévots wants to achieve, since he entered the world of abstraction. An approach that is not always easy in the face of the inevitable questions from the viewer.

Dominique Prévots does not want to impose anything on him, he wants to suggest, to leave him total freedom of interpretation A dialogue at the crossroads between the unreal and the figurative, between the informal and the suggestive. It is the thought that leads to its gesture on the canvas. This thought, present as soon as he confronts the white canvas; thought that does not leave him until the completion of the work. As the work is being constructed, Dominique Prévots talks, the brush in action, sweeping the canvas with incessant gestures, often gentle, caressing, to envelop the creation of an atmosphere, an ambiance.

When he grabs the knife flat, it's to accentuate a specific point of thought that guides him. When he manipulates the sharp side, it is to mark a stopping point, a questioning. The visual work follows this verbal progression, this sequence of reasoning. The artist often instinctively questions himself, wonders about the relevance of his remarks, about their coherence. At the last stroke of the brush, at the last incision of the knife, the reflection ceases, the artist “passes the hand", he entrusts the work to the eyes of the spectator, it is now up to him to deconstruct the thought. of the artist... if he wishes.

The pictorial journey of Dominique Prévots leaves a preponderant part to intuition, to the present moment. The canvas is approached as a blank space, free of any approach, without any preconceived pictorial project. It is gradually covered with colors, fluid for the first layers, then more and more oily, like glazes which act in transparency, in luminous stratifications The artist builds, layer after layer, an architecture of oil colors that allows accidents and missteps, because he improvises his paint assemblies directly on the canvas, with a brush or a knife. The formats follow one another to play on the diversity of the dialogue imagined by the artist. The chromatic lines take us on the path of life, the path we must follow to discover our own consciousness. By small touches and with many themes most often drawn from daily life, the artist invites us to move forward on the path of our consciousness in order to regain our spiritual power. The image is abstract, to awaken the ability of each to progress towards the other, by the simple game of mental suggestion.

An atmosphere emerges independently from each work, but for all that, the whole thus created is an invitation from the artist to join it. An immersion in an imaginary world created from scratch around a universe of warm colors and contrasting tones reflecting the diversity of life and human relationships. The deep contrasts give the message all its intensity Each work is punctuated by a reflection on the surrounding world, on human nature, on existence beyond reality. So many themes to encourage discussion. Each interpretation is a new starting point. A starting point on the paths of consciousness. These paths do not cross, they intertwine in a chaos organized around the human condition.
