Very Motivated This oil painting "Art Deco Nude - 14-08-22" is based on my graphite pencil drawing "Art Deco Nude - 05-08-22". I liked that one and saw the potential for an oil. So I postponed an imminent project (Tribute to Alma Tadema). For this one, I already had a preparatory photo session with my model. But above all. When it's perfectly cooked, serve quickly. The same vibe I had when discovering the potential of new drawing materials that I had when creating this oil. So no delay and voila, I cut straight to the point like a knife through butter. Solutions for hardnesses Before admiring my self-proclaimed precision, I must say that I had to make some modifications. I found the extrapolated linear structures in the negative space around the female form a little too harsh. Strange how straight outlines can create the illusion of soft, rounded shapes. I had to give up those sharp chiaroscuro shots around the body. The solution was to create blocks of red and green airplanes floating freely around the female form. However, I kept the triangle from his back, in reference to the drawing. However, I adjusted it tonally. Enter Coloring For no particular reason, I had a sort of vintage look in mind. I wanted a color scheme resembling old Victorian brass. Sometimes they appear to be lacquered with a greenish patina. I just love those because I can imagine those bygone eras most vividly. They also remind me of my part-time student job as a substitute at the Boerhaave Museum. They exhibit many such objects, such as microscopes and telescopes. We also think of serpentine or marble statues from the Art Deco period. So I used Tourmaline green next to Sevres green for the lighter parts. I counterbalanced these greens with a palette of reds, varying from almost orange to pink. My favorite Nickle Titanium yellow that I used for highlights. The result seems slightly complementary. The orange and brownish reds soften these contrasts a little. I liked what I got: liveliness but also a harmonious impression. Plane-Wise Emotions These colors also match my attempt to capture human emotions on planes, seeing both at the same time. I am completely fascinated by the transition of forms in what we associate with them. Normal people (not artists) take these associations for the real forms. Not me, I disassociate and take back what is stolen from babies. They only see shapes and do not know their meaning. Therefore, from an artistic point of view, it is ridiculous to paint a human body. Reference Image The drawing and painting are inspired by Walter Bird's 1938 photo of model Rosemary Andree, called "Pocet Venus". So my thanks go to him and to all the artists of the Art Deco era in general. Back then, they knew how to perfectly combine craftsmanship and innovation, unlike the trash that served as art today. Corné Akkers

Corné Akkers

Netherlands  • 1969

Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.

In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.

While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
