The love of fabrics. Blue Velvet is my next after the more comprehensive work on Geesje Kwak. Time for an elaboration of a previous drawing Solarised Roundism – 01-07-22. Not named after the movie but more of a reason to unleash my satin fetish. It's not quite a coincidence that I have some of this fabric in my studio. It suits the skin tone of my usual model very well. You definitely agree with me that all the blue stuff complements her orange ochres most vividly. This is not my first project concerning solarization in petroleum. The last was Solarized Roundism - 07-03-22. It was kind of hanging out in the back of my head, I had to do another one. Not a cubist or in my rounded style. As for fabrics in general, I share my love for representing them with people like Gabriel Metsu and Jan van Eyck. Accidental solarization.
This time I kind of wanted the solarization process to take over. Let his style create the magic on my behalf. We artists are often faced with artistic challenges. What to do next? How to come up with an attractive idea for putting on linen? I guess the whole world is out there looking for a great idea or stealing it from those who found one. This is why I regularly turn to the accidental. This time I just let my GIMP image editor play around with the curves in some of the session photos I have of her. Surely such a satin fabric once solarized would give me incredible bling-bling effects. So it's done and I started from there. Also, I abstracted the folds just the level of recognizability.
We find rounding elements but this time helped by computerized algorithms. Color The challenge was also to put the solarization in color. Normally created by light overexposure photographs, it is best shown in black and white. I was wondering what an attractive color palette and solarization would look like combined. The most saturated parts are painted with YInMn paint, also known as "Oregon blue".
The other blues I use are Old Holland Dark Blue and Rembrandt Phtalo Blue Reddish, just to give it some variety. All this blue violence required warm pigments saturated in the skin. I kept a slight rough edge in the complexion in contrast to the satin smoothness.
Regarding the background, the initial idea was to keep the undercoat: perylene black mixed with titanium white. Later, I discovered that the heavy colors of the main theme needed a counterbalance in the negative space.
This painting is also intended as a support for women of color. Let's stop calling them "black". It's not a color. Why is the Woke movement so fond of naming people as such? White people aren't white either. I guess only artists understand me immediately. Colored is more accurate, let alone more pleasing to the ears and eyes. Let my oil painting be the judge. In this respect, the result seems rather expressive, even expressionistic. This is why I consider it deliberate, even urgent. So much for Woke!
Expressionism. This piece comes with an official certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Ready to hang: no. Signature location: bottom left.

Corné Akkers

Netherlands  • 1969

Corné Akkers was born in 1969 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. He grew up in a Bohemian environment, during the 70's. This ideal creative atmosphere inspired him and gave him the desire to paint. He trained in painting and drawing.

In his paintings, the artist explores the nude and portrait with several types of analysis and treatments, and doesn't lose sight on how light plays an important role. He combines the figurative style and the quest for abstraction, he plays around with colors and creates vast optical illusions. Not only is his work unique, his paintings shout out cubism but also surrealism and fauvism. They are so hypnotic that they are able to capture the look.

While working as a painter, Akkers also teach art at Voorburg in Netherlands. His paintings have been exhibited several times and sold to art collectors, all around the world.
