“We enter the intimacy of a material as in a forest, contemplative, observer. Instinctively and humbly, we slow down. And the degree of this slowness, as Milan Kundera would say, is proportional to the intensity of the memory.

At the start of my work there is this unbearable whiteness on which I come crashing down like on a wall. And then a necessary chaos is created, which is not the starting point but a stage from which all desires are born, to touch, to taste, to burn oneself This chaos is a wasteland of immobile and altered memories, with its plants which are not originally intended for anything, they are not cultivated or bred for a particular purpose. They are there, they come back like wolves when we forget them. Like wolves because they recolonize when our backs are turned, they piss us off in our permanent and exhausting cleaning. They are said to be invasive.

From this chaos, from this wasteland of images and collages, variations of gray overlap which accumulate in touches of paint like levels of temporality. »

Thomas Loyatho

France  • 1984

Thomas Loyatho is a French artist born in 1984 in New Aquitaine, he lives in Hasparren and works in La-Bastide-Clairence.

Artistic approach

Thomas Loyatho was born in 1984. His sister, his brother (also a painter) and he grew up in their father's studio (also a painter) like in a playroom! He holds degrees in spatial planning and environmental protection. In addition to being a visual artist, he is a mountain guide.

His experiments are multidisciplinary and in touch with the material. The use of poor or sober materials does not require a technology that would surpass it and make it obsolete, but on the contrary encourages stripping, to reopen the field of possibilities. These materials have in common the fact of having a much broader semantics than that of the molds in which we want to freeze them over time and in different spaces.

Exhuming is part of his approach, these experimental investigations reveal for him an aesthetic that must be the subject of a plastic presentation.

“Certain thoughts do not escape at the moment of pronouncing them, of formulating them, of figuring them on a canvas. But most of them remain abstract, fluid. These thoughts are materials that are not subject to figuration, it is impossible to contain them in the mold of words. They want to tell us that here, words are for those who have nothing to say."

- Thomas Loyatho
