Marine Joatton was born in 1972. She lives and works in Paris.

She graduated from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in 1992. In 1995, she began a university course at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, in Dundee, Scotland. Admitted to the National School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1997, she attended the studios of Joël Kermarrec, Erik Dietman and Giuseppe Penone. She graduated in 2001 and, in 2004, presented her first personal exhibitions. "This dual training has forged a surprising personality, perfectly balanced, in which the rational and the irrational, the deductive and the intuitive mingle in equal parts"
“My universe is a poetic vision, it is populated by hybrid beings that do not exist in reality but in tales, gigantic flowers, dreamy tropics, parties and carnivals that shine with a thousand lights. These representations are phantasmagorical. They do however have an existence in painting which sublimates through the sieve of poetry, real life. My representation of the world or my universe, are dreamed, come out of dreams, nourished by all that I see, I read, and feel and more particularly all the visions and impressions of childhood which marked me deeply (Belle ile en mer , beasts, fireworks...). This representation is true or especially authentic according to my own criteria of truth which have to do with reality such as I perceive it, but which also have largely to do with a whole world resulting from the unconscious which is built from bits of reality and fictions of other authors. This representation of the world is based on what I see and what impresses me. It is also built up thanks in particular to my readings or the works that I encounter. For example, Le grand Meaulnes, read at fifteen, was I think an unconscious inspiration for the gouaches presented at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint Etienne in 2016, in the exhibition "a family resemblance". The tales of Perrault, Andersen or the Brothers Grimm have also significantly influenced the appearance of the protagonists of my paintings. One could also evoke Granville's engravings or Goya's capricious or disparate creatures as so many influences on my representation of the world that is projected in my paintings. In the pictorial field, painters like Watteau (the Gilles), Ensor (masks, carnivals), Munch (very successful hybridization of drawing, line, and painting), Nolde (colors, hybrid characters, monstrous, children), and closer to us, Baselitz (the energy of the gesture, the first dark works featuring a monstrous child masturbating) and Per Kirkeby (the colors, a powerful work between abstraction and figuration) strongly impressed me both literally and figuratively”.

Marine Joatton

France  • 1972

Between abstraction and figuration, drawings Marine Joatton lead us into a disturbing world, violent, powerful and spooky.

They carry an automatic writing while tending to the development of a formal vocabulary consisting of masses and abstract features which emerge pieces of animals, plants, faces, bits of body.

Without idea, Marine Joatton wants to be surprised and accepts these moments of creation where the "letting go" allows the artist to lodge his instinctual so strange universe made of hybrid creatures and landscapes and teeming with life.

Marine Joatton working on his unconscious memory and use of pastels allows him freedom of movement in drawing and color.

Marine Joatton received in 2016 - 2017 a large solo exhibition in the Modern and Contemporary Art museum of Saint Etienne Métropole, in the Gallery 604 in Pusan in 2013, the result of two residences in South Korea
Her work is present in the collections of the FRAC Picardie, in the FNAC paris, in the Imago Mundi Fondation, Bennetton, and in many private collections.
